Another sporting event that always packs the house is wrestling. This was noticeable when professional wrestling company Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) took over Cicero Stadium for their pay-per-view event “Bound for Glory” late October of last year.  The event was a Lucha Libre celebration honoring legendary luchadores Konnan, Juventud Guerrera and Chicago native Samuray Del Sol.

Since its establishment in 2002, TNA has worked with international wrestling promotions including Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

Before cameras rolled, fans got an opportunity to enjoy a “Lucha Fiesta.”

Tacos, tamales and pan dulce were engulfed as fans got autographs and spoke with featured luchadores. Fans were in awe as luchador icon Konnan walked into the crowded scene.

The Puerto Rican and Cuban brawler was a huge proponent that helped Mexican luchadores breakthrough the U.S. market during the rise in popularity of the mid 90’s. Konnan helped bring mainstream exposure to luchador stars, such as Rey Mysterio and Juventud Guerrera.

“It’s an honor to be here with all you fans that have been supporting me throughout the years. Last night, you guys were chanting ‘Juvi! Juvi!’ like it was the old days,” said Juventud Guerrera on his legacy.

Konnan said having good teachers is one of the most important aspects needed for those seeking to join a combat sport.

“If you start off with bad habits, they’re going to follow you around and stunt your growth. You have to sacrifice everything in order to achieve greatness,” said Konnan. “That means not staying out late, hanging out with your friends or partying. You can have talent but if you’re not disciplined, you’re not going to make it.”

Born in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, Emanuel Alejandro Rodriguez, also known as Samuray Del Sol, said he understands hard work all too well. He mentioned that he has succeeded in his lifelong dream of being a luchador.

It was a homecoming for Pilsen local fans as they gathered around Del Sol prior to the event and learned about his journey.

Though born in the United States, Del Sol said he spent the early years of his life in Mexico.

“I was 5 years old in Mexico City selling chewing gum. By 10 years old, I was in Pilsen selling pizza. Anything to help out my family,” said Del Sol. “I’m a 773 lucha kid. Growing up in the Pilsen and Little Village areas, they were tough neighborhoods but it’s home. I came back to visit my family. It’s something I need to remind myself of where I come from.”

Del Sol said his dedication to his craft took him across the globe. From training throughout the Midwest, including Berwyn, to traveling to Mexico and Japan. He mentioned that he was signed by WWE, where he wrestled for several years under the name “Kalisto.”

“When you get an opportunity in life, go for it. Don’t be scared, chase after your dream,” Del Sol said.

TNA’s “Bound For Glory” weekend extravaganza was filled with celebration. Fans got to enjoy a special evening with iconic Latino figures that turned the Lucha Libre art form into a worldwide phenomenon.
